Vertical Incision Breast Reduction

With the different techniques available for breast reduction in Beverly Hills and across southern California, how do you know which is correct for you? The best way is to request a consultation through our Inside Online system, which gives you access to Web-only benefits such as free consultations with Dr. Stevens or Dr. Stoker at select times. At your consultation, your current breast size and shape will be evaluated, and you can discuss your surgical goals. Certain surgical methods work better for different body types and reduction amounts.

The vertical incision breast reduction method (short scar) is a state-of-the-art method that allows for a great amount of tissue to be removed, good nipple repositioning through the pedicle, and about one-half the amount of scarring of a traditional anchor scar.

How a Vertical Incision Breast Reduction is Performed

All Los Angeles breast reduction surgeries at Marina Plastic Surgery are performed on an out-patient basis. While you will be under general anesthesia for the duration of the procedure, you will not need to spend the night in the hospital.

With a vertical incision breast reduction (also known as the short scar method), incisions are made around the areola and vertically down from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease (some people say it looks like a lollipop). The vertical incision breast reduction does not require a horizontal incision along the breast crease, thereby causing much less scarring.

Excess tissue is removed. The amount and type of tissue that needs to be removed is unique for each individual. Some people may have more fatty tissue that needs to be removed, while others may have excess glandular tissue.

The pedicle method is used with the vertical incision breast reduction. This means that while an incision will go around the nipple, it will not undermine the nipple and some portion of the nipple will remain attached to the breast, blood vessels and milk ducts. This improves the chance for the patient to breast feed in the future and retain nipple sensation.

Most vertical incision breast reductions include a Laser Bra breast lift. The Laser Bra provides an internal foundation for support as well as superior breast shape. Learn more about the Laser Bra.

Less Scarring, Shorter Surgery

Dr. Stevens and Dr. Stoker both use laser-assisted techniques for their Los Angeles breast reductions which minimize bleeding, and the duration of the surgery. This in turn means a safer procedure for the patient because it requires less anesthesia and their body can heal better and faster than with other more traditional methods.

Sutures are placed around the areola and down the vertical incision. Internal dissolvable sutures are placed inside the breast to create a strong internal foundation of Laser Bra support.

After the surgery, you will be placed in a special compression garment. You will need to wear the surgical garment for a couple months after the procedure. Most people take about two weeks off from work. At that time light activities can be restarted, but more vigorous activities will have to wait another month or so. Your physician will provide you with clear post-op guidelines for taking care of yourself. It is important to carefully follow these instructions as they will help you heal.

Risks and Complications

All surgeries come with risks of complications, such as infection, hematoma, or swelling. Other complications include nipple necrosis, breast asymmetry and dimpling. Dr. Stevens or Dr. Stoker will discuss with you in detail the possible complications.

Large breasts can limit a person's lifestyle, cause chronic pain and suffering, and even affect your self-esteem. Breast reduction with us in Los Angeles can help with all those problems, providing you more mobility, more ease, and more choices.
