There are several different techniques available for breast reduction in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and across the country. The first step to determine which method is right for you is to request a consultation through Inside Online, our Web-exclusive system offering free consultations at select times. At your consultation, you will be able to discuss breast reduction techniques with Dr. Stevens or Dr. Stoker. While great care is taken to use methods that are less invasive and create the least amount of scarring, ultimately the procedures needed are dictated by the size of the woman's breasts, the amount of ptosis (sagging), and the current position of the nipple.
For women who need a massive amount of tissue removed, free nipple grafting may be required. It is very rarely necessary for Dr. Stevens or Dr. Stoker to perform a free nipple graft.
How it's Done
Free nipple grafting is performed by temporarily removing the nipple from the breast. The nipple is then repositioned and sutured in a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position after the excess breast tissue has been removed.
Breastfeeding and Scarring
When the nipple is removed from the breast it is also separated from the milk ducts. Unfortunately, milk ducts cannot repair themselves after such separation, so a women who has had a free nipple graft will not be able to breastfeed after the operation. A scar along the circumference of the nipple will be present, but often heals nicely.
Possible Risks and Complications
Because the nipple is separated from the breast there is a slight chance of necrosis of the nipple. Some women experience changes in areola pigmentation and most have a permanent loss of nipple sensation. All surgeries carry some level of risks, including infection or excessive scarring. Choosing an experienced physician as well as following all post-op instructions help to minimize any risk of complications.
